WNBA Finals Reach Historic Game 7 as Dream Stun Valkyries in Atlanta
Atlanta's first-quarter blitz in Game 6 forces the first winner-take-all seventh game in WNBA Finals history, set for Halloween night at Chase Center.
SAN FRANCISCO -- The WNBA just wrote itself a new sentence in the record books, and it needed the full seven games to do it.
The Atlanta Dream came into Game 6 Thursday night in Atlanta facing elimination and down 3-2 to the Golden State Valkyries. What followed was not a survival act. It was a statement. According to ESPN's game coverage, the Dream doubled up the Valkyries by the end of the first quarter, led by 20 at halftime and went on to win 80-69, forcing the first Game 7 in WNBA Finals history.
Allisha Gray was the story. She finished with 23 points, going 5-of-7 from three, per ESPN. She was the steadiest hand in a night when Atlanta's shooters caught fire across the board. According to ESPN, the Dream made 13 three-pointers in the game, tied for the most by any team in WNBA Finals history when facing elimination. The 2023 Liberty and the 2006 Shock share that distinction; the Shock, notably, went on to win the title.
Angel Reese played the bruiser role she's built her brand on. She recorded her fourth double-double of the series, finishing with 15 points and 14 rebounds per Fox Sports box score data. Rhyne Howard added 21 points. The Dream outscored Golden State 32-15 in the opening quarter, and according to ESPN, that 25-point halftime lead was the biggest by any team facing elimination in Finals history.
The Valkyries didn't quit. Golden State outscored Atlanta 43-34 in the second half and got as close as eight in the fourth quarter, per a report reviewed by FinChannel. Gabby Williams led the Valkyries with 26 points off 35 minutes of work, per Fox Sports. It wasn't enough.
Now it comes down to tonight. Game 7, Halloween, Chase Center. NBC Bay Area, which first reported the historic nature of the matchup, notes this is the first Game 7 in WNBA playoff history. Both the Valkyries and the Dream are chasing their first championship. The No. 2-seeded Valkyries host the No. 4-seeded Dream, who were swept in three prior Finals appearances before this run.
The series itself has been a coin flip with prettier clothes. The Valkyries won Games 1, 4 and 5. The Dream took 2, 3 and 6. Three of Atlanta's wins have come when they've cracked 70 points or more, per ESPN's Finals tracker. Golden State's best nights have looked more like defensive grind-outs, the kind of game head coach Natalie Nakase prefers.
According to ESPN's preview of Game 7, the Valkyries have thrived when they can slow the pace and force a physical possession battle. The Dream counter with a more free-flowing offense that comes alive when the three-ball is dropping. Thursday night, it was dropping from everywhere.
The scheduling around this series had its own chaos. According to Athlon Sports, a Game 6 scheduling issue forced Atlanta to host at the Hawks' arena on short notice, which didn't appear to bother the Dream one bit. They turned it into a home-court advantage they weren't supposed to have.
Tip-off tonight is 8 p.m. ET on USA Network and Peacock. One team gets a banner. The other gets a long offseason. That's the deal in a Game 7, and the WNBA has never had one until right now.
