U.S. Wins Presidents Cup on Historic Sunday Rally, but Foursomes Problem Follows Team to Ireland

MEDINAH, Ill. -- The trophy is back in American hands. Whether the Americans earned it the right way is a different conversation, and it's one that's going to follow this team all the way to Adare Manor.

The United States won the 2026 Presidents Cup at Medinah Country Club on September 27, beating the International side 17-13 to claim its 11th consecutive Presidents Cup title and move to 14-1-1 all-time in the competition, according to Golf Channel. Captain Brandt Snedeker got the comeback he needed. He also exposed, again, the structural rot that keeps costing his team in the formats that actually matter.

Here's what happened: the U.S. trailed by three points going into Sunday singles. The Internationals, captained by Geoff Ogilvy, needed just five of a possible 12 points on the final day to pull off only the second International victory in the event's history. They got 2.5. According to CBS Sports, the Americans went 9-2-1 in singles to turn that three-point hole into a four-point win, the largest final-day comeback in Presidents Cup history.

Single-day drama, sure. But the week told a different story before Sunday.

According to ESPN, the U.S. is 8-26 in foursomes across two Presidents Cups and two Ryder Cups since 2023. That's not a slump. That's a pattern. Scottie Scheffler, the world's No. 1 player, is somehow 1-8-0 in foursomes in team play during that stretch. Snedeker sat him for Saturday afternoon's foursomes session, which was probably the right call tactically and a quiet admission that the team's problems in that format run deeper than any one player.

Yahoo Sports reported that the Americans repeatedly ignored the statistical case for certain pairings, trusting gut and friendship over data, then got run over in foursomes. They also failed to set up Medinah to favor their strengths. According to analysis in Golf Digest, that was the same mistake made at Bethpage Black during the 2025 Ryder Cup loss.

There's a structural problem here that no captain keeps around long enough to fix. As Golf Digest noted, the Presidents Cup belongs to the PGA Tour while the Ryder Cup belongs to the PGA of America. The same core of players competes in both events but institutional knowledge doesn't carry over. Each captain starts from scratch, runs his week his way, and walks out the door before the lessons can be tested again. There's no permanent Team USA apparatus that studies what works and builds on it.

Snedeker acknowledged the heat he took during the week and came out swinging afterward. According to Sky Sports, he said the team is "going to be a problem" for Europe at Adare Manor. That may be true. It may also be exactly the kind of chest-thumping that looks hollow when the foursomes board goes bad on Day 2 in Ireland.

Golf Monthly pointed out that Europe, under captain Luke Donald, will be a considerably sterner test than Geoff Ogilvy's International squad, and the Americans will be away from home in a country that has never seen a U.S. win on European soil since 1993. Sunday singles have bailed the Americans out in three straight team events now. Bleacher Report noted that the U.S. still hasn't won a Ryder Cup on foreign soil in over three decades.

Snedeker's players believed, competed hard on Sunday, and got the job done when the pressure was highest. Rookie Jackson Koivun was a genuine bright spot, building momentum on the back nine when the U.S. needed it most. Those are real positives. But a win that required the largest final-day comeback in the event's history is not a clean bill of health. It's a warning dressed up as a celebration.

The Ryder Cup at Adare Manor is less than a year away. Jim Furyk takes over as U.S. captain. He'll have all the same talented players, the same foursomes problem, and roughly the same amount of time to solve it that everyone else has had. The trophy at Medinah buys some goodwill. It doesn't buy a fix.
