U.S. Budget Deficit Hits $1.992 Trillion for Fiscal 2026, Third-Largest on Record
The Treasury Department reported the shortfall Friday, a 12% jump from fiscal 2025 driven by record spending on Social Security, Medicare, and debt service, even as the government operates on a continuing resolution through December.
WASHINGTON, The federal government closed fiscal year 2026 with a $1.992 trillion budget deficit, the Treasury Department reported Oct. 16, marking the third-largest annual shortfall in U.S. history and the biggest since COVID-era spending inflated the ledger in 2020 and 2021.
The figure, drawn from the department's final Monthly Treasury Statement for September, represents a 12% increase over the $1.775 trillion deficit posted in fiscal 2025, according to Treasury data reviewed by CNBC and Yahoo Finance.
Receipts for the year totaled $5.403 trillion. Outlays came to $7.396 trillion. The gap between them widened by roughly $217 billion in a single fiscal year, according to the Treasury statement.
Social Security was the largest spending category, at nearly $1.7 trillion, up from roughly $1.6 trillion in fiscal 2025. Medicare came in just under $1.1 trillion, compared with slightly less than $1 trillion the year before. Net interest payments on the national debt exceeded $1 trillion for the fiscal year, according to figures reported by Yahoo Finance, making interest the second-largest line item in the budget, trailing only Social Security.
A report aggregated by Ground News, citing Treasury figures, noted that tariff refunds also weighed on the bottom line after the Supreme Court negated a portion of President Donald Trump's earlier trade levies, contributing to a $22 billion drop in tariff receipts even as total outlays hit a record.
The deficit amounts to roughly 6% of U.S. gross domestic product, according to the Treasury's September monthly statement. The gross national debt now sits above $40.3 trillion, having crossed the $40 trillion mark in August.
It's the 25th consecutive fiscal year the federal government has run a deficit. The last surplus was in 2001.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has argued the country can grow its way out of its debt obligations. In a statement reported by Ground News, Bessent said in August that global growth is the path to managing long-term borrowing. Members of Trump's team characterized the fiscal 2026 result as a blip, according to Yahoo Finance's account of the release.
The Congressional Budget Office, in its February 2026 baseline, projected deficits would reach $3.1 trillion by fiscal 2036, with debt held by the public at 120% of GDP. CBO identified net interest costs and major benefit programs as the primary long-term pressure points, according to figures reported by Finchannel.
The fiscal year closed just as Congress moved to fund the next one. A continuing resolution enacted in September extended fiscal year 2026 spending levels through Dec. 11, 2026, kicking full-year appropriations decisions for fiscal 2027 into a post-election lame-duck session, according to a tax policy review published by CBH Advisors. Government funding is expected to be among the first items on the year-end legislative agenda when Congress returns after the midterm elections.
The deficit number arrives with the midterms three weeks out and with both parties already drawing battle lines over the trajectory of federal spending.
