Treasury Reports FY2026 Deficit at $1.992 Trillion, Up 12% From Prior Year

The federal government's fiscal 2026 shortfall is the third-largest annual deficit on record, behind only the COVID-era spending years of 2020 and 2021.

WASHINGTON -- The federal government closed fiscal year 2026 with a budget deficit of $1.992 trillion, the Treasury Department reported Oct. 16, marking the 25th consecutive year the United States has spent more than it has collected.

The deficit widened by about $217 billion, or 12 percent, from the previous fiscal year, according to the department's final Monthly Treasury Statement for the year.

Receipts reached $5.403 trillion and outlays totaled $7.396 trillion in the statement, which covers the fiscal year ended Sept. 30.

The figure is the third-highest annual deficit in U.S. history, behind only 2020 and 2021, when the federal government was paying out trillions of dollars in financial stimulus amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

A Treasury official told reporters that the department estimated the deficit at 6.2 percent of gross domestic product for fiscal 2026, up from 5.8 percent in fiscal 2025, but declined to say what GDP estimate was used.

Net interest -- gross interest minus the interest Treasury earns on its own holdings -- topped $1 trillion for the year at $1.052 trillion, compared with $970 billion the year before. Interest on the debt now costs more than either Medicare or the defense budget.

Individual income taxes helped offset the shortfall by bringing in more than $2.8 trillion, a rise of about 7 percent year over year. Corporate income tax provided $381 billion, a decrease of about $70 billion from fiscal 2025, stemming from tax cuts included in the One Big Beautiful Bill passed by Congress last year.

"And there you have it: at an astonishing $2 trillion in borrowing, Fiscal Year 2026 had the largest deficit in our history outside of a war or recession," said Maya MacGuineas, president of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, a nonpartisan group that advocates for deficit reduction.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has argued that economic growth, rather than spending cuts alone, is the answer to the debt.

The gross U.S. national debt passed $40 trillion in August. The latest Debt to the Penny reading from the Treasury Department put it at $40,329,229,827,541.02.

The deficit figure landed as Congress was operating under a continuing resolution enacted in September. That measure continues fiscal year 2026 funding levels through Dec. 11, 2026, pushing full appropriations decisions to the post-election lame-duck session.

The Congressional Budget Office's latest 10-year projection had put the fiscal 2026 deficit at $1.853 trillion -- below the reported outcome -- and forecasts deficits of $1.887 trillion in fiscal 2027 and $2.080 trillion in fiscal 2028.

The fiscal 2026 deficit is the first full-year budget result of President Donald Trump's second term. Members of his team, according to a report in Yahoo Finance, have described the result as a blip and said the fiscal situation is coming under control. MacGuineas and other fiscal watchdog groups disputed that framing.
