Super Micro Discloses $60 Billion in Quarterly Orders, Nearly Doubles Margin Outlook
The server maker's preliminary Q4 filing shows a record backlog and gross margins of 15–17%, roughly double prior guidance, though revenue is expected near the low end of its range.
Super Micro Computer filed a preliminary fourth-quarter business update with the SEC on July 21, and two numbers are running the story: orders and margins. The San Jose company said it took in more than $60 billion in new orders during the three months ended June 30, 2026, pushing its backlog to a record. That order figure is the headline, but the margin revision is the one traders should sit with.
In a Form 8-K reviewed by CNBC and confirmed in the company's SEC filing, Super Micro said its GAAP and non-GAAP gross margins for the quarter are now expected to land between 15% and 17%. The company's own May guidance called for 8.2% to 8.4%. That's not a rounding error. Management attributed the swing to a "favorable customer and product mix", language the market read as a signal that higher-value, rack-scale AI systems are displacing lower-margin commodity server work.
The stock responded accordingly. Shares closed Tuesday at $25.50, up roughly 7%, then surged an additional 18% overnight after the after-hours disclosure, according to reporting by FX Leaders. Rivals Dell Technologies and Hewlett Packard Enterprise also saw their shares advance on the update, per CNBC, a sign the market read the order number as a sector-wide demand signal.
The revenue picture is softer. Super Micro guided Q4 revenue to the low end of its previously issued range of $11.0 billion to $12.5 billion. The LSEG analyst consensus, as reported by CNBC and Yahoo Finance, stood at $11.67 billion. The company will host a full earnings call on August 11 to deliver complete results.
Then there's the SpaceX thread. CEO Charles Liang posted on X last month that the company was building "another new Gigawatt AI datacenter for @SpaceX and @xAI within a year," according to reporting by Insider Monkey and BigGo Finance. Super Micro's relationship with SpaceX is part of what Digitimes described as a new class of "neocloud" buyers reshaping the company's order mix. One thing to flag: SpaceX has not confirmed whether it accounts for any portion of the record backlog, per Yahoo Finance. Investors are pricing in a connection that has not been independently verified from the buyer's side.
The backlog itself carries its own asterisk. Super Micro noted in its preliminary filing, as reported by BigGo Finance, that some orders may not constitute binding purchase commitments and could be subject to cancellation or delay. A $60 billion headline number with a cancellation clause attached is not the same as $60 billion in locked revenue.
Context matters here. This is the same company that raised $7 billion in equity financing in June to buy components needed to fulfill what was then described as $39 billion in AI server orders. The June raise diluted shareholders and sent the stock lower. Even after this week's surge, SMCI shares remain down roughly 17% year to date, according to BigGo Finance.
Super Micro assembles servers built around GPUs from Nvidia, AMD, and Intel, and its pitch is speed: getting the newest accelerators into deployable, often liquid-cooled systems faster than competitors. The order data suggests hyperscalers and AI infrastructure operators are still paying for that capacity. Whether the margins hold when those orders convert to recognized revenue is the question the August 11 call will need to answer.
