Shopify beat Wall Street's second-quarter estimates by a wide margin on Wednesday, reporting results that silenced near-term concerns about competition from AI-powered rivals and reversed a months-long slide in its stock.

The company posted $3.58 billion in revenue for the quarter ended June 30, according to results published on Shopify's investor relations page. That's up 34% from the year-earlier period, or 33% in constant currency, well ahead of the $3.44 billion consensus estimate reported by Yahoo Finance ahead of the print.

Gross merchandise volume, the headline measure of commerce flowing through Shopify's platform, grew 32% year over year to $115.6 billion. Free cash flow came in at $654 million, yielding an 18% margin, up from 16% a year earlier. Operating income reached $488 million. Net income was $1.50 billion, though the company noted that figure includes equity investment impacts; excluding those, it was $439 million.

Within the revenue line, merchant solutions, which includes payment processing and lending, reached $2.78 billion. Subscription revenue was $802 million. The merchant solutions number matters because it scales with GMV; when that segment grows faster than subscriptions, it signals that Shopify is capturing a larger slice of each transaction, not just adding new merchants at a flat fee.

The stock closed Wednesday up roughly 19%, and reports from StockStory put the immediate post-earnings move at 25.1%, to $154.97. The shares had shed about 25% of their value since January, according to Quartz, which reported that Rothschild and Co Redburn downgraded the stock to neutral in July on the argument that Meta's push into AI tools for small businesses could erode Shopify's competitive edge.

That downgrade thesis took a hit on Wednesday. According to Retail TouchPoints, which reviewed the earnings call, AI-attributed traffic and orders to Shopify stores each tripled year over year, and 75% of AI-attributed purchases came from outside the platform's top 100 product categories. The company said its AI assistant, Sidekick, handled nearly 34 million merchant conversations in Q2, with daily active merchant usage up 3.6 times from the prior year.

Chief Financial Officer Jeff Hoffmeister pointed to operating leverage as the mechanism connecting GMV growth to margin expansion. Shopify President Harley Finkelstein characterized the quarter as one showing "more than 30% growth in GMV AND revenue AND gross profit AND free cash flow," in a statement reviewed by Quartz.

Full-year guidance was raised. For Q3 2026, Shopify said it expects revenue to grow at a low-thirties percentage rate year over year. Gross profit dollar growth for the same period is projected in the mid-to-high twenties percent range, above the 24.1% analyst consensus reported by Yahoo Finance. Free cash flow margin targets for Q3 were not disclosed in full.

The forward guidance deserves the usual scrutiny. Shopify's Q3 revenue guidance range is wide enough to bracket both upside and miss scenarios depending on holiday-season pull-forward behavior. The company has beaten consensus in two of the past four quarters, matched once, and missed once, according to Zacks data reviewed ahead of the report. One strong quarter does not resolve the longer-term question of whether AI tools lower the barrier to building a standalone commerce operation, which would reduce merchant reliance on managed platforms like Shopify.

What the numbers do confirm: for now, merchants are not leaving, GMV is accelerating, and Shopify is extracting more cash from each dollar of commerce it processes.
