'Project Hail Mary' Hits Prime Video After $683 Million Theatrical Run

That MGM+ stop is the interesting wrinkle. Most Amazon originals skip straight to Prime. Routing "Project Hail Mary" through the pay-one tier first signals that MGM+ is being groomed as something more than a dumping ground for catalog titles. Whether that strategy paid off in subscriber numbers, Amazon hasn't said.

What the numbers do say is that the film itself was a genuine phenomenon. According to reporting by Forbes, it grossed $683.5 million worldwide, making it the fourth-highest-grossing film of 2026 so far, and it set a new record for Amazon MGM Studios' biggest opening ever. Per the Hollywood Reporter, it's only the second non-sequel or non-franchise film in the past decade to open to $80 million or more domestically, following "Oppenheimer." That is a very short list.

Directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the duo behind "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" and "The Lego Movie," were an inspired choice for material this emotionally specific. Weir's novel lives and dies on the relationship between Ryland Grace and his alien companion Rocky, and a screenplay adaptation by Drew Goddard kept that friendship at the center. The film holds a 94% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, according to Forbes, with audiences landing a point higher.

For book readers who've been holding their breath: Variety noted that Weir told Den of Geek he "might write a sequel someday," but it's nothing he's actively working on, and he's said his next project is a standalone novel. So don't hold out for a Rocky origin story just yet.

What "Project Hail Mary" actually proves, more than anything, is that the mid-budget original film isn't dead. It just needed the right story and a star people actually want to spend two-plus hours with. Gosling hasn't been this well-suited to a role since "Drive." He's playing earnest, which is harder than playing cool, and it works completely.
