Nolan's 'The Odyssey' Opens to $124.5M Domestically, Sets New Record for Director

Christopher Nolan just did something nobody does anymore: he opened an R-rated, nearly three-hour adaptation of a 2,700-year-old Greek poem and turned it into a genuine box office event. 'The Odyssey' landed $124.5 million at the domestic box office over its opening weekend, according to figures reported by Variety, making it the third-largest opening of 2026 behind 'Toy Story 5' and 'The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.' That is remarkable company for a sword-and-sandal epic that doesn't have a single superhero in it.

Globally, the picture cleared $263 million in its debut frame. As Deadline reported, that's the best worldwide opening of Nolan's career, topping 'The Dark Knight Rises,' 'The Dark Knight,' and 'Oppenheimer.' For context, 'Oppenheimer' was considered a cultural phenomenon. Nolan just quietly lapped it on opening weekend.

The cast is a who's-who situation that reads like a studio's wish list. Matt Damon leads as Odysseus. Tom Holland plays Telemachus. Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong'o, Charlize Theron, and Jon Bernthal all fill out the ensemble, per Deadline's reporting on the film's release.

The format story is just as interesting as the box office one. 'The Odyssey' is the first feature film shot entirely with IMAX cameras, a milestone Nolan has been building toward since 'The Dark Knight' became the first Hollywood release to use IMAX cameras for select sequences back in 2008. Thursday night previews alone brought in $17.6 million, with 58 percent of that total coming from IMAX, premium large format, and 70mm screenings, according to Deadline. The IMAX 70mm print played on only 34 screens. It sold out anyway.

The Hollywood Reporter noted that half of the film's audience was between the ages of 18 and 34, which is the number studios spend millions trying to crack. The Reporter attributed part of that Gen Z pull to a wave of content creators who've made Nolan's filmmaking process itself into a subject of fascination online.

What's worth sitting with here is that the culture-war noise the film briefly attracted earlier this year didn't stick. Deadline observed that while some anti-woke chatter surfaced on social media, a large share of the audience, roughly 43 percent, only goes to the movies a few times a year. Those aren't the stan-account crowd. Those are people who showed up because Nolan told them it was worth the trip.

That's the real story behind these numbers. The movie business has spent years watching theatrical attendance erode, blaming streaming, blaming shorter attention spans, blaming everything but the films. Then Nolan arrives with an ancient Greek epic that runs close to three hours, charges premium IMAX prices, and people clear their Saturday. Competing studios apparently read the room: Variety reported there are no wide releases scheduled for the coming weekend, leaving 'The Odyssey' another clear week before Sony's 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' arrives July 31.

If Oppenheimer was the proof of concept, 'The Odyssey' is the confirmation. Nolan has become one of the very few directors whose name alone functions as a release strategy.
