NFL Takes Its First Regular-Season Game to Australia, with Rams and 49ers Set for MCG on Sept. 11

The NFL has been playing international games since 2007, and the formula is always the same: pick a franchise with overseas marketing rights, hand them a home date, send the other team on a long flight, and call it growth. Thursday night, the league tries that formula 10,000 miles further from home than it's ever tried it before.

The Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers kick off at 8:35 p.m. ET Thursday, which is 10:35 a.m. Friday morning local time in Melbourne. The venue is the Melbourne Cricket Ground. According to reporting by NFL.com and confirmed on the league's official Melbourne game page, this is the first regular-season NFL game ever played on Australian soil, and it counts in the NFC West standings.

That last part matters. This isn't a preseason exhibition or a glorified scrimmage. As noted by Yahoo Sports in its preview of the matchup, it's "an NFC West rivalry game that counts in the standings, wrapped inside a genuine piece of league history." Topendsports.com reported that 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan has said he knows "for a fact" the Rams lobbied to move one of their home games against San Francisco all the way to the MCG, keeping a hostile red-and-gold road crowd out of a game that would otherwise have gone to SoFi Stadium. The Rams hold NFL marketing rights in Australia. Make of that what you will.

The logistics alone are worth a paragraph. According to ESPN's Melbourne game FAQ, the Rams planned to fly in and fly out of Melbourne within 48 hours, while the 49ers chose to spend more time in Australia to adjust to the time zone. Whether a two-day turnaround is a competitive edge or a team-management shortcut is a debate coaches and trainers will be having for years, because someone is going to lose this game and they'll be doing it jet-lagged.

The broadcast situation tells you something about where the NFL thinks its money is. According to Netflix's own Tudum coverage, the game is a Netflix exclusive worldwide in the United States, included in every subscription tier. No traditional broadcaster, no cable package. Netflix put Noah Eagle on play-by-play and Luke Kuechly, the 2026 Hall of Fame inductee, in the booth for his debut as an analyst. The ministry of sport reported that Netflix will broadcast a total of five NFL games globally in 2026, and the Melbourne game is the lead-off.

The league told reporters, per the 49ers' own news release, that the Melbourne game is part of a record nine international games in 2026 across four continents, seven countries, and eight stadiums. The international schedule now includes stops in Rio de Janeiro, London, Paris, Madrid, Munich, and Mexico City in addition to Melbourne. According to a statement cited by the Ministry of Sport, NFL Australia and New Zealand General Manager Charlotte Offord said the region now counts over 8.8 million fans, a 47 percent increase over three years.

That number is worth watching, because 47 percent growth off a smaller base is still a smaller base. The MCG holds north of 100,000 people, per the Yahoo Sports preview, and filling it with NFL fans in a country where Australian rules football, cricket, and rugby union have century-long head starts is a real test of the league's reach, not a foregone conclusion.

What the NFL is selling Thursday is atmosphere, novelty, and the idea that a divisional rivalry plays anywhere. It might be right. The Rams and 49ers have produced some genuinely ugly, physical football over the years. None of it was played at 10 in the morning after a transoceanic flight.

Somebody's going to fumble on a morning they'd rather be asleep. That part, at least, will feel familiar.
