NFL Suspends Falcons Edge Rusher James Pearce Jr. Eight Games for Conduct Violation

The NFL dropped an eight-game suspension on Atlanta Falcons edge rusher James Pearce Jr. on Friday for violating the league's personal conduct policy, according to a league announcement covered by NFL.com. The ruling means the Falcons, who went to the trouble of trading back into the first round of the 2025 draft to grab this kid at No. 26, will not see him on a regular-season field until November.

The backstory is not pretty. According to CBS Sports, Pearce was arrested on February 7 following a domestic dispute with then-girlfriend Rickea Jackson, a WNBA player. Police responding to the scene in Doral, Florida found him standing outside a white Lamborghini SUV. When an officer drew his weapon and ordered Pearce to the ground, the 22-year-old got back in the vehicle, locked the door, and drove off. Police pursued him. He crashed. After a foot chase, he was apprehended.

The Miami-Dade State Attorney charged him with three felonies: aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, fleeing and eluding police, and resisting an officer with violence. A stalking charge was knocked down to a misdemeanor. As reported by NBC Miami, those felony charges could be dropped if Pearce completes a pretrial intervention program that includes random drug tests, maintained distance from Jackson, and no new legal trouble for a year. He entered that program in April.

The league let him participate in preseason. Per the Atlanta Falcons' own announcement, the suspension clock starts August 30, the same day rosters drop to 53. Pearce can apply for reinstatement November 2, which puts him back in time for a Week 9 game against the Cincinnati Bengals in Madrid.

None of that math helps Atlanta in the near term. Per NFL.com, the Falcons are also without Jalon Walker, a first-round pick from a year earlier, who tore his ACL in training camp and is done for the season. Two young edge rushers, two draft capital expenditures, both unavailable when the season opens. That's not a depth chart problem. That's a front-office bill coming due all at once.

Pearce wasn't some project. According to the Falcons' own site, he led Atlanta with 10.5 sacks as a rookie, the most by a first-year player since Micah Parsons put up 13 in 2021. He was the engine of what was shaping up to be a legitimate pass rush.

The NFL also suspended three other players the same day, according to Yahoo Sports: Commanders edge rusher Dorance Armstrong got one game for a conduct violation and will miss Washington's opener against the Eagles on September 13; Titans safety Nazeeh Johnson and Bills defensive tackle Phidarian Mathis also received suspensions.

Armstrong's one-game ban versus Pearce's eight says something about how the league graded the severity here. Felony charges, a police pursuit, a crash, a foot chase. Eight games is the number the NFL landed on. Whether that's proportionate is a conversation that will run all the way to Week 9.

For Atlanta, the question is simpler and more immediate: who's getting to the quarterback while their two best pass rushers sit?
