NFL Suspends Cardinals Scouting Director Gold for Gambling; State Agency Opens Probe

The NFL's ongoing war with its own gambling problem has a new casualty, and this time the problem is coming from inside the building.

The league suspended Arizona Cardinals director of college scouting Ryan Gold indefinitely on July 17, according to the Associated Press, for allegedly violating its gambling policy. Then, as reported by NBC Sports' ProFootballTalk on July 21, the Arizona Department of Gaming opened its own investigation into the situation -- a second front that raises the stakes considerably above a routine league discipline case.

The allegations against Gold are the kind that keep front-office compliance people up at night. According to the Associated Press, league investigators found that Gold shared non-public information about the Cardinals' 2026 NFL Draft selections before they were announced, and that he placed parlay bets on both NFL and college football games. The league didn't publicly name who received the draft information, which is the detail everyone should be watching.

Gold is no fringe staffer. He's in his 13th season with the organization and was promoted to director of college scouting in 2025, according to FOX 10 Phoenix. That's not a guy who doesn't know the rules. The NFL reviews its gambling policy with all personnel annually. Gold would have seen that presentation a dozen times.

The attorney also maintained that Gold wasn't involved in the team's final draft decision-making process and therefore couldn't have leaked the picks.

The $10-a-week parlay-with-the-friend-group defense is the kind of thing that might play in front of a jury. Whether it works with the NFL's appeals process is a different matter. The league has shown it doesn't grade gambling violations on a curve.

What makes this case messier than most is that second investigation. A spokesperson for the Arizona Department of Gaming told ESPN's David Purdum that the department had been notified and "regularly work[s] with integrity monitoring organizations and sports leagues in situations like this." That's a state regulatory agency now in the mix, which means Gold's problems don't end with whatever the NFL decides on appeal.

The Cardinals' response was brief and institutional. The club said it "fully supports" the league's decision and stressed the situation involves a single employee. Training camp is next week. They'd very much like to talk about football.

That's the front-office posture when one of your own gets caught in the gambling net: contain, distance, move on. What the Cardinals can't control is whether the state probe turns up anything the NFL's internal investigation missed.
