Netflix's 'Little House on the Prairie' Opens to Modest Numbers Despite Early Season 2 Renewal
The streamer's big-budget adaptation of Laura Ingalls Wilder's classic books landed at No. 3 on Netflix's English TV chart with 6.4 million views in its opening week, a quieter debut than the pre-renewal confidence suggested.
Netflix dropped all eight episodes of its new Little House on the Prairie adaptation on July 9, and the numbers that came back were, to put it plainly, fine. Not a phenomenon. Fine.
According to Deadline, the series debuted at No. 3 on the English TV chart for the week of July 6 with 6.4 million views. For a show the streamer had already pre-renewed for a second season, that's the kind of opening that makes a publicist choose their words carefully. Deadline noted that the four-day premiere performance did beat out recent Netflix original The Boroughs, which pulled 5.6 million in the same window, so it's not a disaster. But it's also well behind Harlan Coben's I Will Find You, which claimed first place on that same chart for its fourth consecutive week, adding 11.5 million views to its running total.
The show itself is a genuine reinvention, not a nostalgia cash-in, which is either its selling point or its liability depending on who you ask. Showrunner Rebecca Sonnenshine, known for her work as an executive producer on The Boys, is the creative force here. According to reporting from Netflix's Tudum, the first season is inspired by the third book in Wilder's series, and per a Deadline feature from the Bentonville Film Festival, Sonnenshine has stressed that women's perspectives are central to the adaptation she built. That's a meaningful reframe for a property whose most famous screen version, Michael Landon's NBC run from 1974 to 1983, tended to center the patriarch pretty heavily.
The cast is built around newcomer Alice Halsey as Laura, with Luke Bracey and Crosby Fitzgerald rounding out the family. What's on Netflix reported back in April that the series follows the Ingalls family's move from Wisconsin to settle in Independence, Kansas, framing the journey as part family drama, part survival story, part origin myth of the American West. That's a wider, more ambitious lens than the original show ever attempted, and you can see why Netflix bet on it.
What you can also see is the strategic thinking behind the pre-renewal. Netflix has been quietly building a lane for warm, heartland-rooted comfort programming. Tudum's own coverage placed Little House alongside Virgin River and Sweet Magnolias as anchors of that emotional territory. Renewing before anyone had seen a frame is a way of signaling to that audience, and to talent, that Netflix is a committed partner rather than a platform that cancels first and asks questions later. It's a smart message. Whether it translates into actual viewers remains the open question.
The books themselves are nearly a hundred years old and have never really stopped selling. The show's source material is, by any measure, one of the most durable literary properties in American culture. That durability cuts two ways. The built-in audience is real. So is the loyalty to the Landon version, which still has passionate defenders who will notice every departure.
Two weeks in, Little House is a slow build, not a breakout. Netflix has the runway, and the budget, to let it find its people. The question the next few weeks will answer is whether those people show up.
