Netflix's 'Heartstopper Forever' Arrives July 17 With the Graphic Novel That Inspired It

The countdown is real now. Netflix drops 'Heartstopper Forever' on July 17, and for anyone who has followed Nick Nelson and Charlie Spring since Alice Oseman first posted their story to Tumblr in 2016, that date carries genuine weight.

The timing is deliberate. Oseman insisted the book come out before the film, and she said so publicly. Speaking at the London Book Fair in March, as reported by PinkNews, she told the audience: "It was so important to me that the book comes out first, so people can experience the end of the story in the book. The series was the adaptation, not the other way around." Volume 6, the final installment of the graphic novel series, hit UK shelves July 2 and landed in the U.S. on July 7 -- giving American readers a ten-day window to sit with the ending before the film delivers its own version of it.

That framing matters. Oseman has controlled the Heartstopper universe from the start, and her insistence on the book-first sequence is a quiet statement about where the story actually lives. The Netflix adaptation made these characters famous, but the comics were always the original artifact.

For the film itself, Oseman wrote the screenplay, and according to Netflix Tudum, she also serves as an executive producer alongside stars Kit Connor and Joe Locke, who have been bumped up to EP credits for the first time. What's on Netflix noted that the release date was announced exactly four years to the day after the show's first season dropped in 2022, which is either a beautiful coincidence or the kind of careful calendar move that Netflix's marketing team definitely made on purpose.

The film runs one hour and fifty-one minutes. That's shorter than a full season, and Oseman has had to do some explaining about the format choice. In comments relayed by What's on Netflix, she acknowledged that the runtime is "less than a TV season" and said even she "needed some time to process and come to terms with the change." But she landed on the film format as the right call, arguing that without episodic cliffhangers, every scene could breathe more. Director Wash Westmoreland, whose credits include 'Still Alice,' steps in for Harry Bradbeer.

Plot-wise, the film picks up where season three ended. As Netflix Tudum describes it, Nick is preparing to leave for university, which puts the long-distance question squarely on the table. Oseman told PinkNews exclusively that the film takes "a slightly grittier look at romance and what it is to be in a long-term relationship" -- a tonal shift from the sweeter registers the show has occupied. She's been drawing these characters for over a decade, and the ending, she says, is exactly what she wanted.

One notable absence: according to Hollywood Life, Olivia Colman did not return to reprise her role as Nick's mother Sarah, citing scheduling. It's the one gap in an otherwise complete reunion.

The book-to-screen pipeline has been one of the dominant stories in entertainment for a few years now, and 'Heartstopper' is a useful case study in how to do it without losing the source material's soul. Oseman has written every episode and now the film. That kind of continuity of authorship is rare, and it shows. Whether the finale sticks the landing or not, nobody can say the story was handed off to people who didn't understand it.
