Netflix's 'East of Eden' Bets a Steinbeck Classic on Florence Pugh as the Villain

Netflix drops its adaptation of John Steinbeck's East of Eden on October 1, and the choice the show makes right out of the gate tells you everything about what it thinks the book has always really been about. According to Netflix's Tudum, the seven-episode limited series is written and executive produced by Zoe Kazan, and it centers not on the tortured sons or the sprawling California farmland but on Cathy Ames, the novel's mercurial, destructive antiheroine. Florence Pugh plays her. That casting is either the best idea in prestige television this fall or an enormous swing, and possibly both.

The family-history angle here is genuinely strange and worth sitting with. As reported by Deadline, the 1955 film version of East of Eden was directed by Zoe Kazan's grandfather, Elia Kazan, and that film made James Dean a cultural monument. Zoe Kazan's adaptation is not a remake of her grandfather's film. It's a reinvention of the source novel, and the creative pressure of that lineage had to have been real. She told Netflix Tudum that her guiding principle was Steinbeck's own description of the book: that it needed to be both epic and intimate.

What the series does with that mandate, according to Collider, is put Cathy front and center as the engine of the story, framing the whole Trask family saga through her warped, clarifying lens. Christopher Abbott plays Adam Trask. Mike Faist, fresh off Challengers, plays Charles. Joseph Zada and Joe Anders play the Cain-and-Abel sons, Cal and Aron. The bench is deep: Martha Plimpton, Ciarán Hinds, Tracy Letts, and Hoon Lee round out a cast that reads like a wish list someone actually got to fulfill. Garth Davis directed the first four episodes; Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre handled episodes five through seven.

CNN covered the show's imminent arrival on September 28, noting that Kazan's adaptation of the iconic Steinbeck novel marks the latest in a wave of literary prestige projects hitting streaming this fall. That wave is real. As UPI reported on September 22, adaptations of East of Eden, Stephen King's Carrie, and The Hunger Games prequel Sunrise on the Reaping are all arriving in the next two months, which is either a golden moment for readers who want their books reflected back at them or a sign that the streaming industry has decided the only reliable IP left is the American literary canon.

The Cathy Ames choice is the one that will define whether this series earns its budget. In the novel, Cathy is almost supernaturally evil, and Steinbeck writes her that way on purpose, as a test of the book's central argument about human free will and inherited sin. A lot of Steinbeck critics have spent decades arguing she's a flaw in the novel, a monster too convenient for the story's moral architecture. Pugh's whole screen presence runs counter to that reading. She's an actor who makes you trust people you shouldn't. Casting her as Cathy suggests Kazan wants to complicate the character rather than just render her as a cipher.

If it works, East of Eden could be the kind of streaming event that reminds people why seven-episode limited series exist. If it doesn't, it's a very expensive argument with a dead novelist. Either way, you're going to want to watch the first episode before anyone tells you how it ends.
