Netflix Drops 'The Whisper Man' Aug. 28 With De Niro, Adam Scott Leading Alex North Adaptation

Seven years is a long time to wait for a serial killer to show up at your door. Alex North published The Whisper Man in June 2019, and within weeks it was a New York Times bestseller, praised across the literary community for blending a genuinely supernatural atmosphere with a grounded police procedural. Now, according to coverage on Netflix Tudum and reporting confirmed by Deadline, the adaptation finally has a release date: August 28, 2026, globally on Netflix.

The book was always a hot property. According to a report reviewed by AOL, Joe and Anthony Russo acquired the rights through their production company, AGBO, months before the novel was even published. Netflix joined four years later. The director who ended up with the job is James Ashcroft, the New Zealand filmmaker behind The Rule of Jenny Pen and the brutal Coming Home in the Dark, which means this is not going to be a cozy, prestige-drama treatment of the material. Ashcroft knows how to make a room feel wrong.

The cast is the kind that makes you sit up. As reported by The Week, Robert De Niro and Adam Scott head the film, with Michelle Monaghan rounding out the principal trio. Wikipedia's production listing also puts Michael Keaton and John Carroll Lynch in the ensemble, which means even the supporting roles here have real weight. Scott plays Tom Kennedy, a widowed crime writer whose eight-year-old son is abducted. De Niro is Pete Willis, the retired detective who originally put away the serial killer now connected to the new disappearance, and also Tom's estranged father. The screenplay is by Ben Jacoby and Chase Palmer, the latter best known for co-writing the 2017 adaptation of It, per What's on Netflix.

For readers of the novel, the casting makes a certain kind of sense. North's book is built on the texture of a damaged father-son relationship as much as the horror of the killer himself, and Scott has spent the better part of a decade (Severance, obviously, but also his quieter dramatic work) proving he can carry that kind of weight without telegraphing it. De Niro in a supporting role that's actually written well is a different proposition than De Niro phoning it in for a paycheck, and from what the trailer suggests, this is the former.

The film has been rated R by the MPA for bloody violence, disturbing images, and suicide, per Vital Thrills. That tracks for North's source material, which never pretended to be anything other than what it is: a horror novel dressed in the clothes of literary crime fiction.

This is AGBO's sixth partnership with Netflix, following The Grey Man and The Electric State, which both landed with mixed notices. The Whisper Man feels like a different animal from those two, less action-franchise ambition and more contained, atmospheric dread. Whether Ashcroft can hold that register for a feature-length Netflix thriller, where the tendency toward scale and spectacle is always a gravitational pull, is the real question.

North's novel has a devoted readership that's been watching this adaptation slowly materialize for years. They'll have an answer on August 28.
