Netflix Closes Out Summer With 'Outer Banks' Final Season and 'The Whisper Man' Adaptation

Netflix is making an aggressive push to own the last weeks of August. Two tent-pole titles land in quick succession: the fifth and final season of Outer Banks on the 20th, and The Whisper Man, the long-in-development adaptation of Alex North's debut novel, on the 28th. Together they tell you a lot about where the streamer thinks its subscribers are right now and what it believes will keep them from wandering off to a competitor.

Start with Outer Banks, because it's the one people have feelings about. According to a report by Variety, it's been more than a year and a half since Netflix last visited the Outer Banks, and the show's fifth and final season now has its premiere date locked. The ten-episode run drops all at once, no split-season trick this time, per What's on Netflix. The final season picks up in the wreckage of what happened in Morocco, where season four killed off JJ, which the Outer Banks Fandom wiki confirms sent the Pogues to their lowest point yet. Series creators Josh Pate, Jonas Pate, and Shannon Burke are all back as writers and executive producers to close out the story, according to Netflix's own Tudum page, which also notes they claim to have known the final scene since the beginning. That's either genuinely moving or a very effective piece of marketing, depending on your relationship with the show.

It's worth saying out loud that Outer Banks is one of those shows that critics and the algorithm have never agreed on. The plotting has always been maximalist to the point of incoherence, and it has never really cared about your objections. That's not a knock; plenty of great television works that way. What it did do was make genuine stars. As DiscussingFilm noted in its August lineup roundup, the series helped launch the careers of Madelyn Cline and Drew Starkey, both of whom have since built real film resumes. Finishing a show like this, with its audience still intact after six years, is actually a hard thing to do.

Then there's The Whisper Man, which is a completely different proposition. Netflix confirmed the film's global premiere for August 28, and per reporting from The Week, it's directed by James Ashcroft, a New Zealand filmmaker who works in psychological thriller and horror. The cast is Robert De Niro as retired detective Pete Willis, Adam Scott as his estranged son Tom, a widowed crime writer whose eight-year-old boy goes missing, and Michelle Monaghan. The screenplay is by Ben Jacoby and Chase Palmer, who wrote the 2017 adaptation of Stephen King's It, per What's on Netflix.

The source material is Alex North's 2019 debut novel, which became a New York Times bestseller rapidly on publication. According to Netflix Tudum, North wrote the book when his own son was roughly the same age as young Jake in the story, and the author has said the emotional engine was always the question of what parents pass on to their children. That's a more interesting hook than the serial-killer-who-might-still-be-operating plot, and it's exactly the kind of thing that tends to get lost in adaptation. Whether Ashcroft and his cast keep hold of it is the question worth watching.

The film has been rated R by the MPA for bloody violence, disturbing images, and language, according to Vital Thrills. It's also Netflix's sixth collaboration with the Russo brothers' production company AGBO, which is a relationship with real institutional weight behind it.

Two very different shows. One audience that grew up on the beach with the Pogues and is ready to say goodbye; another audience that read a chilling novel in 2019 and has been waiting to see what it looks like on screen. Netflix is betting both groups will show up in the same ten-day window. That's a confident play.
