Netflix Closes Out 'Heartstopper' With a Feature Film Instead of a Fourth Season

'Heartstopper Forever,' the 114-minute finale directed by Wash Westmoreland and written by Alice Oseman, dropped July 17 to strong reviews, wrapping four years of Nick and Charlie's story.

Four years is a good run for a high school love story. Netflix apparently agreed, and so did Alice Oseman, because 'Heartstopper' isn't ending with a fourth season, it's ending with a movie. 'Heartstopper Forever' landed on the streamer July 17, and if the early reception is any guide, the gamble paid off.

According to Variety, the film picks up right where Season 3's finale left off, with Kit Connor's Nick preparing to leave for university and Joe Locke's Charlie finding new footing at school on his own. The central tension is the one every long-distance couple knows: can what you built in the same hallways survive separate zip codes? At 114 minutes, it clocks in roughly equivalent to four and a half standard episodes, which is a tight container for a sendoff, but Oseman seems to have designed it that way deliberately.

Oseman, who wrote the screenplay as she has every prior installment, told Netflix Tudum that the format change wasn't a compromise, it was a creative choice. As reported by What's on Netflix, she described the film format as freeing: "With no need for end-of-episode cliffhangers or a new twist every episode, every part of Heartstopper can be elevated to a higher quality." Fans pushed back a little when the season-four pivot was first announced in April 2025, and Oseman acknowledged it directly at the time. But she held the line.

The director this time is Wash Westmoreland, best known for 'Still Alice' and 'Colette,' stepping in for Harry Bradbeer, who helmed the series' first two seasons. As noted by Collider, Connor and Locke also stepped up as executive producers for the first time, a move that reads as Netflix giving the leads some real ownership over how the characters say goodbye. Connor told Netflix Tudum that serving as EP let them "say goodbye to them in a way that feels the most right."

The reviews are good. According to Wikipedia's aggregated data, Rotten Tomatoes has the film at 93% on 27 reviews, with Metacritic landing at 67 out of 100, indicating generally favorable notices. Aramide Tinubu at Variety called it "a mature and elevated swan song" that gives fans a satisfying goodbye.

There's also a noteworthy casting change baked into the farewell. Olivia Colman, who played Nick's mother Sarah Nelson across all three seasons, did not return. According to the film's Wikipedia entry, Anna Maxwell Martin stepped into the role in April 2026. That's a significant swap for a franchise built on continuity of feeling, though Martin is a serious actress and the creative team clearly didn't make the change casually. Derek Jacobi also joins the cast as a new addition.

One thing worth noting about the whole arc here: 'Heartstopper' started in 2022 as a show almost specifically designed for the BookTok generation. Oseman's graphic novels already had a devoted online fanbase before Netflix ever touched them, and the series became one of the platform's cleaner examples of adaptation actually feeding back into readership. According to Primetimer, the film is based on the sixth and final volume of the graphic novel series, as well as the novella 'Nick and Charlie.' Fans who want to sit with the ending can do exactly that, in book form, after the credits roll.

Four years, three seasons, one movie, and a farewell documentary called 'Heartstopper: Ending on a Hi.' That's a tidy house to leave in order.
