The film adapts Alex North's 2019 debut novel, a psychological thriller that spent time on the New York Times bestseller list and was praised, as The Week noted, for its ability to blend "a terrifying, supernatural atmosphere with a traditional, grounded crime police procedural." That's a harder needle to thread than it sounds, and the source material earned it.

The cast is the immediate headline. Robert De Niro plays Pete Willis, a retired detective who originally put away a serial killer known as the Whisper Man. Adam Scott plays Tom Kennedy, Pete's estranged son and a widowed crime writer whose eight-year-old boy is abducted.
