The number is worth saying plainly: a billion dollars. That's what 'Michael,' Lionsgate's long-in-development Michael Jackson biopic, pulled in before most people had even decided whether to bother. Now it's on Starz, and a whole new wave of viewers is about to form an opinion.

The film arrived on the streaming platform on August 10, completing what Deadline described as a 108-day theatrical window after opening April 24 to $97.2 million domestic and $217 million worldwide, the best opening weekend ever for a musical biopic. By the time the domestic run wrapped in late July, the picture had earned $372.3 million at home and roughly $647.7 million internationally, according to Music Observer, with Japan, the United Kingdom, and Latin America accounting for a substantial chunk of that international total.

Variety's critic Owen Gleiberman praised the newcomer for capturing, in his words, 'the look, the voice, the electrostatic moves' and suggested the film could be the rare biopic to launch a sequel, with Lionsgate expected to confirm one.

That sequel question is where things get genuinely complicated. The first film stops at the Bad era, which keeps it in the crowd-pleasing years. The later chapters of Jackson's life, the accusations, the trials, the tabloid decades, are a different kind of material entirely. Music Observer put it plainly: how the sequel navigates that territory 'will define whether Lionsgate can replicate the first film's commercial trajectory or whether the more complex later chapters resist the crowd-pleasing treatment that drove the original to $1 billion.'
