Michael Jackson Biopic 'Michael' Hits Starz After Becoming Highest-Grossing Biopic in History

The numbers alone deserve a moment. 'Michael,' Antoine Fuqua's sprawling biopic about the King of Pop, has landed on Starz and immediately shot to No. 1 on the platform. That's a tidy ribbon on a run that, as confirmed by Deadline, opened April 24 to a $97.2 million domestic debut, the best opening weekend ever for a musical biopic, and never really stopped.

By the time Lionsgate set the streaming date, the film had logged a 108-day theatrical window and cleared $1 billion worldwide, according to reporting from Deadline. That makes it the highest-grossing biographical film in cinema history, passing Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer. For Lionsgate, it's a milestone of a different kind: the first billion-dollar title in the studio's history.

Fuqua directed from a script by John Logan, and the film covers Jackson's story from his Gary, Indiana childhood through the Bad tour in the late 1980s. It doesn't reach Thriller, doesn't touch the legal controversies of the '90s, and, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter, had to retool a planned third act after a legal constraint tied to a past settlement blocked the dramatization of a named accuser. The result is a movie with a defined endpoint, and a sequel in the pipeline. According to Collider, Lionsgate film chief Adam Fogelson confirmed a follow-up is in development, with production slated to begin in late 2026 or early 2027.

The cast around Jaafar Jackson, the King of Pop's real-life nephew and a first-time film actor, is loaded. Colman Domingo and Nia Long play Joe and Katherine Jackson. Larenz Tate takes on Berry Gordy. Miles Teller and Laura Harrier fill out key industry roles. Kat Graham appears as Diana Ross. According to TheGrio, critical response to Jaafar specifically has been warm, with Variety's Owen Gleiberman praising him for capturing the "look, the voice, the electrostatic moves."

The audience-versus-critics split is real, though. Per CBR, which cited FlixPatrol streaming data, the film earned mixed-to-negative notices from critics while pulling a 97% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and an A- CinemaScore, per Deadline. That's a familiar biopic pattern: critics pick at the seams while audiences show up in enormous numbers for an experience that feels like a celebration rather than an interrogation.

That gap is worth sitting with for a minute, because it tells you something about what these movies actually are. 'Michael' isn't trying to be 'I, Tonya' or 'Capote.' It's closer to a concert film with a plot, and on those terms, a billion dollars says audiences found what they came for. Whether the sequel, presumably covering Thriller, Bad, and the years beyond, has the courage to go anywhere uncomfortable is the question Fuqua and Logan will have to answer.
