'Mandalorian and Grogu' Tops Disney+ Charts After Stumbling at the Box Office

The lowest-grossing live-action Star Wars film ever debuted on Disney+ on Sept. 2 and immediately became the most-watched movie on the platform worldwide, raising fresh questions about what theatrical Star Wars is actually for.

There's a very specific kind of Hollywood story that keeps getting told, and 'Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu' is the latest to tell it: the movie that the multiplex didn't want, streaming swallows whole.

According to Variety, the film grossed $345 million worldwide in theaters after its May 22 opening, making it the lowest-grossing live-action Star Wars movie ever, falling below even 'Solo: A Star Wars Story's' $393 million haul. Deadline reported its production budget alone sat at $165 million, before a single dollar of marketing. By the math analysts laid out, as reported by Rolling Out, the film needed somewhere between $440 million and $590 million to break even on its theatrical run. It didn't get there.

Then September 2 arrived. According to Screen Rant, following its Disney+ debut, 'The Mandalorian and Grogu' shot to number one in 70 countries, including the U.S., Brazil, Canada, Germany, Italy, Mexico, and Spain. The companion podcast, per Screen Rant, landed at number one on the U.S. charts for shows. The LEGO Star Wars special that dropped the same day came in sixth globally for movies and second in the U.S. Disney didn't just release a movie on its platform; it dropped a whole content package and watched the numbers move.

None of this is a surprise, exactly. Collider noted the film picks up directly after 'The Mandalorian' Season 3, with Pedro Pascal returning as Din Djarin alongside a cast that includes Sigourney Weaver, Jeremy Allen White voicing the villain Rotta the Hutt, and Martin Scorsese in a supporting acting role. The show has three seasons of built-in audience loyalty, the kind you can't buy with a marketing campaign but apparently can lose when you ask those fans to drive to a theater and pay for popcorn.

Deadline framed the problem bluntly: moviegoers essentially didn't want to go out of their way to see a streaming property on the big screen, particularly one that landed at 60% with critics, even if audiences gave it an 86% score. That audience score, as Collider reported in its streaming-redemption piece, does seem to be doing real work now that the film is home.

The question this keeps begging is one the whole industry should be wrestling with more openly. Disney spent years conditioning its most engaged viewers to expect Star Wars on their couch, for the price of a subscription they already pay. 'The Mandalorian' was a streaming show first, loved as a streaming show, and built its fandom entirely on that intimacy. The decision to move it to theaters as a test of IP viability may have tested the wrong thing entirely. It didn't test whether people love Mando and Grogu. It tested whether they'd change their viewing habits for characters they already had a couch-based relationship with. They wouldn't.

That said, Disney is almost certainly not reading the streaming charts with anything other than satisfaction right now. As Screen Rant put it, the film was expected to bring in high viewership on Disney+ given the show's track record, and it's already delivering. Whether that translates to a greenlit sequel, or whether Disney quietly recalibrates how it routes the next Star Wars story, will tell us a lot about whether this outcome reads as a failure or a redirect.

The next live-action Star Wars theatrical film, 'Starfighter,' is already in the pipeline, per Collider. Whoever is making that call about release strategy has a very fresh data point to work with.
