LeBron James Signs With 76ers on Two-Year, $8 Million Deal in 'Last Decision'

PHILADELPHIA -- LeBron James is going to Philly. The NBA's all-time leading scorer announced Friday on X that he's signing with the Philadelphia 76ers on a two-year, $8 million deal with a player option, calling it his "last decision" after seriously weighing retirement. Klutch Sports Group CEO Rich Paul confirmed the contract terms to ESPN's Shams Charania.

Let that number sink in. According to ESPN, James made nearly $53 million with the Los Angeles Lakers last season. He's now taking a contract that starts at just under $3.9 million this year. That's not a pay cut -- it's a near-total relinquishment of market leverage in favor of a ring chase. You can question a lot of things about how James has played the free-agent game over his career, but you can't call this one a money grab.

James posted on X that he "thought he was done" when the Lakers' season ended and that he "was pretty sure" he'd played his last game. According to NBC News, he wrote that he needed to "look at myself and decide if I still love this game" before settling on Philadelphia. He did and he chose the Sixers over a reported field that included the Golden State Warriors, Miami Heat, and Minnesota Timberwolves, per Yahoo Sports.

The Sixers didn't wait around for James to make up his mind before fortifying the roster. Earlier this month, Philadelphia acquired Jaylen Brown from the Boston Celtics in exchange for Paul George, two first-round picks (2028, 2031), and two second-round picks. According to ESPN's Shams Charania and confirmed by The Athletic and The Boston Globe, the deal became official July 6. Brown, 29, averaged 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 5.1 assists last season, finished sixth in MVP voting, and was the 2024 Finals MVP. The Celtics had first tried to move him to Milwaukee in a deal for Giannis Antetokounmpo before Milwaukee went to Miami instead. Boston settled for Paul George and picks. Philadelphia got a top-five wing in the league.

Then LeBron said yes. So now the projected starting five in Philadelphia, per Stadium Rant, is Tyrese Maxey, VJ Edgecombe, Jaylen Brown, LeBron James, and Joel Embiid. That is either a dynasty or a very expensive injury report, depending on how the next twelve months go. Embiid is 32 and has never played a full NBA season. James turned 41 in December. Brown has been healthy but was just traded away from a comfortable situation. Maxey is 25 and the one guy in this group whose legs are fresh.

Still, the front-office construction here deserves credit. Bob Myers, president of Harris Blitzer Sports and Entertainment, reportedly appeared on Rich Paul's podcast to pitch James directly, per ESPN. That's not how these things usually get done. It worked.

The Sixers have won one playoff series in each of the last two seasons and have been bounced before the conference finals in six of their last nine years, per NBA.com, despite posting the league's fifth-best regular-season record over that stretch. The talent has never been the whole problem in Philadelphia -- staying on the floor has been. Now they've added a 41-year-old on a near-minimum contract and a traded Finals MVP as the solution.

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro declared Friday LeBron James Day in the state, according to NBA.com. The Eastern Conference has roughly ten months to figure out how it feels about that.
