Hyperscalers Raise AI Capex Again After Q2 Earnings Confirm Demand Outpaces Supply
Amazon, Google, Meta, and Microsoft collectively raised 2026 infrastructure spending guidance past $700 billion, with Amazon CEO Andy Jassy warning capacity will fall short of demand through at least 2027.
The clearest signal from Big Tech's Q2 2026 earnings season was not revenue growth. It was the supply constraint. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy told investors on a conference call, according to CNBC's earnings report, that even at $220 billion in capital expenditures for the year, the company "will still not have enough capacity to meet all the demand" it has in 2026, and that he expects the same gap to persist in 2027. He added that demand already booked for 2028 is, in his words, "striking."
That single disclosure frames the entire earnings season. The question the market spent a year asking, whether AI infrastructure spending could ever be justified by actual returns, got answered differently by each company. The split in stock reactions made the answer visible.
Microsoft rose roughly 8% after reporting. Azure, its cloud platform, made the case in straightforward terms: demand exceeds supply. According to TradingKey's earnings scorecard published July 31, the market accepted Microsoft's $41 billion quarterly capex as defensible precisely because the company tied it directly to unfilled customer orders. That framing, supply-constrained rather than speculative, is now the standard every hyperscaler is trying to meet.
Amazon cleared the same bar. AWS revenue grew 37% year over year in Q2, its fastest pace since 2021 according to CNBC, surpassing Wall Street's estimate of 31% growth. The AWS contracted backlog hit $496 billion, per Jassy's own disclosure on the call. Amazon shares rose about 10%.
Meta and Alphabet got a harder reception. Meta reported Q2 revenues of $60.8 billion, up 28% year over year, but EPS came in 13.8% below estimates. The shortfall traced to $2.4 billion in legal costs and $1.18 billion in severance tied to 8,000 layoffs, per TradingKey's analysis. More telling for infrastructure investors: Meta's free cash flow dropped from $8.5 billion to $784 million in a single quarter, with $31.1 billion in capital expenditures consuming nearly all of the $31.9 billion in operating cash flow. Meta still raised its full-year capex guidance to $130 to $145 billion.
The cash flow picture is worth watching as a structural signal. As BingX's analysis of the quarter noted, Amazon's trailing twelve-month free cash flow turned negative at approximately negative $7.6 billion, making it the second hyperscaler after Meta to reach that point. Revenue is growing, demand is real, but the gap between operating cash generation and infrastructure spend is widening.
All four companies, according to analysis at Uncover Alpha, are now running the same capital staging playbook: lock in land, data center shells, and power contracts early, because those are the long-lived commitments. Hold off on chip orders until a few months before deployment, because chips are the biggest line item and short enough lead time to let demand signals catch up. If demand softens, you don't place the chip order. It's a reasonable hedge against overbuilding, but it depends on the demand signals staying legible, which they appear to be.
Data Center Knowledge's August 2026 developments roundup noted that in their Q2 calls, Microsoft, Alphabet, and Meta all shifted focus from aggregate capex totals to time-to-energy, power procurement, and how fast infrastructure converts to revenue-generating compute. That's a meaningful change in how these companies are narrating the buildout. Capex as a raw number no longer moves the stock. The operational metric is how quickly a dollar of construction becomes a dollar of billable capacity.
Combined, the five largest US cloud and tech companies now project roughly $660 to $690 billion in infrastructure spending for 2026, per Futurum Group's analysis, up from approximately $380 billion in 2025. Amazon alone accounts for $220 billion of that. The constraint holding the number down is not capital. It's power availability and physical construction time. Those are slower to fix than a balance sheet.
