Hollywood Bets Big on the Canon This Fall, From Steinbeck to Suzanne Collins

The publishing industry has spent years watching its backlist get strip-mined for IP, but this fall is something different. According to a rundown published by UPI on September 22, at least a dozen books are being adapted for film and television between now and the end of November, and several of them carry genuine cultural weight.

The biggest swing is Netflix's "East of Eden," which drops October 1 as a seven-episode limited series. Florence Pugh plays Cathy Ames, the novel's cold-blooded antihero, and she's also an executive producer on the project. The adaptation was written by Zoe Kazan, a detail that carries its own charge: as Deadline has noted, Kazan's grandfather, Elia, directed the 1955 film version of the same Steinbeck novel with James Dean. Three generations, same source material. Christopher Abbott plays Adam Trask, Mike Faist plays Charles, and the rest of the Trask family saga is filled out by Ruth Wilson and Ciarán Hinds. Netflix will drop all seven episodes at once, which feels right for a story this dense and this rewatchable.

Then there's Lionsgate's "The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping," arriving in theaters November 20. Suzanne Collins published this second prequel in March 2025, and it didn't take long for the adaptation machinery to spin up. The film centers on a young Haymitch Abernathy -- 16 years old, District 12, entering the 50th Hunger Games -- played by Joseph Zada. The casting choice is worth noting: Zada is also playing Cal Trask in "East of Eden," which makes this fall something of a coming-out party for one actor. Woody Harrelson played the older Haymitch across the original franchise; now the franchise needs someone to fill in the early chapters. The supporting cast assembled for this one is almost aggressively stacked: Elle Fanning as Effie Trinket, Jesse Plemons as Plutarch Heavensbee, Ralph Fiennes returning as President Snow, Mckenna Grace as Maysilee Donner.

The UPI piece also flags the Ali Hazelwood adaptation arriving on Prime Video. Hazelwood's novel "The Love Hypothesis" started, as UPI reported, as fan fiction about the Star Wars ship "Reylo" before becoming a published romance and a BookTok staple. Prime Video is bringing it to screen with Lili Reinhart and Tom Bateman as the leads. It's a different category of cultural event than Steinbeck, obviously, but it's the same industrial logic: find a book with a pre-built audience and let the algorithm do the rest.

What's striking about this particular cluster isn't just the volume. It's the range. You have a prestige literary adaptation with art-house DNA sitting right next to a YA franchise sequel sitting right next to a BookTok romance that began as fan fiction. The studios aren't choosing a lane. They're betting that the reading audience and the streaming audience are the same people, which, judging by how consistently book-based content drives subscription numbers, they probably are.

For anyone who grew up with the Steinbeck on a high school syllabus and has been quietly dreading what Netflix might do to it: the creative team here is not an easy one to dismiss. Kazan as adapter, Garth Davis among the directors, Pugh as both lead and producer. Whether "East of Eden" lands or stumbles, it won't be for lack of trying. That's more than you can say for most of what arrives in October.
