'Heartstopper Forever' Wraps Netflix's Beloved Queer Teen Saga With a Feature Film

Alice Oseman's graphic-novel romance ends its four-year Netflix run on July 17 with a 114-minute movie replacing what was once planned as a fourth season.

There's a version of this story where 'Heartstopper' Season 4 drops like clockwork and we all move on. That's not what happened. Instead, Netflix's queer teen drama will conclude with a feature film titled 'Heartstopper Forever,' premiering July 17, 2026, as the definitive series finale replacing the planned fourth season. It's the kind of structural swing that can feel like a consolation prize, or it can feel like a creative upgrade. Based on everything Alice Oseman has said publicly, she's betting hard on the latter.

Written and created by Oseman and directed by Wash Westmoreland, the 114-minute movie adapts the sixth volume of Oseman's graphic novel series and explores the ultimate test of Nick and Charlie's relationship as they navigate life after high school, including the challenges of a potential long-distance relationship and Charlie's growing independence. Oseman has described the film as a more mature look at romance in the transition from adolescence to adulthood, which squares with where the graphic novels have been heading for a couple of volumes now.

When fans pushed back on the movie-instead-of-season news, Oseman didn't dodge the concern. As reported by What's on Netflix, she addressed it directly: "I totally understand if fans are a little apprehensive. It's a big change from what we know," Oseman said, before adding: "But once I began to see the entire vision, I knew it would be something even more beautiful than a regular season could achieve. We are feeling very ambitious about what is possible in a movie format. With no need for end-of-episode cliffhangers or a new twist every episode, every part of Heartstopper can be elevated to a higher quality." That's a promise, and it's the kind of promise that either makes a fandom very happy or becomes the one quote that gets screenshotted forever.

The book-first principle matters here too. Oseman told Deadline in a Q&A at the London Book Fair that "it was so important to me that the book comes out first, so people can experience the end of the story in the book." She continued: "The series was the adaptation, not the other way around." That's a relatively rare posture in IP-first streaming culture, and it says a lot about how Oseman has held onto creative control throughout this whole run. The final graphic novel, Volume 6, hit shelves in the United States on July 7, 2026, giving readers ten days with the ending before the film drops.

Before it became a globally adored Netflix smash hit, Heartstopper had humble beginnings as a Tumblr comic. Ten years have gone by, and while Heartstopper has shapeshifted from comic to show to film, one thing has remained: Oseman has always held the pen. That continuity is genuinely unusual and worth naming. The original Heartstopper ran on Webtoon and Tumblr before Hachette picked it up for print, and Oseman's byline is on the movie script too.

The film is written by Oseman, who serves as executive producer alongside stars Kit Connor and Joe Locke, both of whom are credited as executive producers for the first time. Connor told Netflix Tudum that "these characters have meant a lot to us over the years. As EPs, it feels like we can really say goodbye to them in a way that feels the most right."

Netflix isn't letting the moment pass quietly. Accompanying the film's release are 'Heartstopper Forever: The Official Podcast' and a behind-the-scenes special, 'Heartstopper: Ending on a Hi,' both debuting on Netflix in July 2026. The special is described as a "love letter to the community it brought together" and will serve as the ultimate send-off for the Osemanverse adaptation.

One notable absence: every main star from Heartstopper returned for the film except Olivia Colman, who was not available to reprise her beloved role as Sarah, Nick's mother. That's going to sting for some viewers.

Whether the movie format pays off or leaves the fanbase wishing for more episodes is a question that gets answered July 17. But as franchise endings go, this one at least has the right person writing it.
