Giants Lose Dart for Season, Turn to Winston as Harbaugh Weighs QB Trade

NEW YORK, The New York Giants spent the last year building their offense around Jaxson Dart. It took one opening drive in Week 2 to watch it come apart.

Dart will undergo surgery and miss the rest of the 2026 regular season after suffering a knee injury on Monday night in the Giants' 28-6 loss to the Los Angeles Rams, head coach John Harbaugh confirmed Wednesday following practice. According to reporting reviewed by Fox Sports, the surgery is expected to lead to a full recovery, but Dart's second NFL season is done.

The damage is considerable. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, as cited by The Big Lead, Dart suffered damage to his MCL, PCL and meniscus, with the meniscus being the primary concern. His ACL is intact, which at least spares the Giants the worst-case scenario. Harbaugh did not rule Dart out for the postseason entirely, though that math requires the Giants to actually get there.

Dart went down on the Giants' opening possession. He dropped back to pass, jumped to release the ball under pressure, and was hit by a pair of Rams defenders before grabbing his left knee on the way to the turf. He walked off under his own power and was initially listed as questionable to return before being ruled out. He came back later in street clothes and watched the rest of the blowout from the sideline.

Harbaugh named Jameis Winston the starter going forward, which is where the story gets complicated. Winston replaced Dart Monday night and completed 11 of 27 passes for 111 yards with an interception, as reported by Yahoo Sports. The offense managed six points after Dart left. Winston hasn't held down a full-time starting job since 2019 with Tampa Bay, and his recent work in New York last season didn't do much to inspire confidence.

Harbaugh isn't pretending otherwise. According to a report by Fox Sports, the coach said Wednesday that the Giants will add a quarterback, called "all options" open, and confirmed a trade is on the table. Among the names in circulation per Yardbarker: Anthony Richardson, J.J. McCarthy, and Tua Tagovailoa, none of whom are currently starting for their teams. The free-agent market is thin, with Jimmy Garoppolo among the available veterans.

Dart entered this season as the unquestioned starter, the No. 25 overall pick from the 2025 draft. In Week 1 against the Cowboys, he completed nearly 80 percent of his passes for 230 yards and three touchdowns, as noted by CBS Sports. That was the version of this team that had Giants fans talking. The version that played out Monday night, with Winston going 11-of-27 behind a game plan built for a different quarterback, is what New York has to work with now.

The Giants are 1-1 and host the Tennessee Titans in Week 3. It's a winnable game on paper. But Harbaugh acknowledged Wednesday, according to the team's own website, that the offense will need a new game plan built specifically around Winston's strengths rather than running back Dart's script. He's right that it's not tennis, you can't forfeit. But when you've spent 12 months designing an offense around a 23-year-old who can both throw and run, pivoting to a 32-year-old backup in September isn't a minor adjustment.

The front office built this season on Dart. Whether they can salvage it without him is the only question that matters right now.
