A drug-resistant fungus that federal health officials classify as an urgent antimicrobial threat is showing up in healthcare facilities across nearly half the country this year, and the patients at risk aren't the worried-well googling symptoms at home.
Provisional CDC surveillance data show 3,182 confirmed clinical cases of Candida auris reported in the United States so far in 2026, spread across at least 23 states as of the week ending July 18, according to figures reviewed by RTTNews and independently corroborated by Healthline and Newsweek. Texas leads the country with more than 700 cases, followed by Michigan with more than 500, and Illinois with roughly 370.
The population that actually matters here is narrow and vulnerable. Nearly all confirmed infections occur in patients who are already seriously ill: people on ventilators, those with central venous lines or urinary catheters, and residents of long-term acute care hospitals and skilled nursing facilities. The CDC states that people without those healthcare-associated risk factors generally don't become infected or colonized. That distinction matters enormously when you're deciding how alarmed to be, and it matters even more when a headline calls this a superbug "spreading across America" without naming who's actually getting sick.
What makes C. auris genuinely worrying at the clinical level is the combination of resistance and persistence. The fungus can also colonize a patient's skin without causing illness, and it survives on bed rails, blood pressure cuffs, and shared equipment long enough to reach the next patient in the same room. The CDC has estimated, based on limited data, that 30 to 60 percent of people with C. auris infections have died, though many of those patients had other serious underlying illnesses that also raised their mortality risk.
The year-over-year trend adds context that's mostly missing from current coverage. CDC data show cases climbed from 2,882 in 2022 to a peak of 6,197 in 2024 before falling to 3,348 in 2025. The 2026 count of roughly 3,130 through mid-July tracks roughly with last year's pace. That's not a reassuring plateau, but it's also not the exponential curve the scariest headlines imply.
Infection control in affected facilities is the practical lever here. Effective interventions include strict hand hygiene, gowns and gloves for direct patient care, cleaning with the right disinfectants, clear signage outside an infected patient's room, and documented communication when colonized patients transfer to another facility, including home. Rapid identification matters too: C. auris can be misidentified by older laboratory methods, which means cases go undetected and isolation precautions don't get triggered in time.
For families with a relative in an ICU or a skilled nursing facility, the right questions to ask aren't about personal risk. They're about whether the facility has the lab capacity to identify C. auris quickly, whether transfer protocols include infection status, and whether staff are following contact precautions consistently. Those are the questions that actually map onto the evidence.
