Dream Take WNBA Finals Lead as Atlanta Hosts Valkyries for Games 4 and 5
Angel Reese's 27-point, 16-rebound Game 2 performance swung the series, and now Atlanta controls it 2-1 heading into Saturday's Game 4 at State Farm Arena.
ATLANTA, The 2026 WNBA Finals have done exactly what a good series is supposed to do: flip on you.
The Golden State Valkyries came into this thing as the home team with homecourt advantage and Gabby Williams running hot. They took Game 1 at Chase Center on the strength of a 17-6 closing run, Williams finishing with 26 points in a 68-64 win. Two days later they dropped Game 2 by 14, and the series moved to Atlanta tied.
According to a game preview published by the Valkyries on their official site, Game 3 went to the Dream as well, giving Atlanta a 2-1 series edge headed into Saturday afternoon's Game 4 at State Farm Arena.
The story of Games 2 and 3 is Angel Reese. In Game 2, according to a game recap on the Valkyries' official site, Reese put up 27 points on 11-of-16 shooting and 9-of-11 from the line, added 16 rebounds and two blocks, and outscored the next closest player by 12. Golden State's starters mostly disappeared. Only Williams reached double figures for the Valkyries with 14.
The free throw disparity made the spread worse than the shooting numbers suggested. As noted in the Valkyries' own game notes, Golden State attempted 16 fewer free throws in Game 2, got outscored 30-16 from the line, and the two teams had otherwise made the same number of field goals and three-pointers. That's not a matchup problem. That's a foul trouble problem, and it's been building since Game 1.
The Valkyries also committed 19 turnovers in Game 2, per the team's site, the most in franchise playoff history. Atlanta scored 24 points off those turnovers and won the points-off-turnovers battle by 11. You can live with a team shooting better than you. You can't keep spotting them extra possessions.
None of this should come as a shock, given who's in this series. As NBC Sports reported ahead of the Finals, both the Valkyries and the Dream reached this round by sweeping their respective semifinal opponents: Golden State knocked off the defending champion Las Vegas Aces, Atlanta dispatched the New York Liberty. Two defense-first organizations, both hunting their first title. The Liberty and the Aces, two programs that have owned this league for years, are watching from home.
What's easy to miss in all the Reese noise is how the Dream got here in the first place. According to the Valkyries' pregame notes, Atlanta finished two games behind Golden State in the regular-season standings and won nine of their last 10 games to close the year. They came in as the No. 4 seed. They've looked like the No. 1 seed since about midway through Game 2.
The Valkyries, for their part, made their own history just by showing up. Per the team's official site, Golden State is the only WNBA expansion franchise to reach the Finals in its second season. That's an organizational achievement. Right now, though, they need to figure out how to guard the low post and stop giving Atlanta the foul line.
Game 4 tips Saturday at 1 p.m. ET on NBC. If Atlanta wins it, the Dream go home with a chance to close out the series Monday night at Chase Center. If Golden State wins it, this becomes a real series again. The schedule runs through October 31 if it goes seven, and given how these two teams play defense, nothing about this will be easy or clean.
Reese is the best player on the floor right now. The Valkyries need an answer for that before Saturday, not during it.
