Delta Cuts Full-Year Profit Forecast as Fuel Surge Swamps Revenue Gains

The airline missed Wall Street estimates for the first time in two years and slashed its 2026 EPS guidance by roughly $1.50 at the midpoint, blaming a $1.6 billion fuel-cost spike that ran $500 million above its own projections.

Delta Air Lines walked into its September-quarter earnings call on October 9 with a revenue story most carriers would envy, then spent the rest of the call explaining why it wasn't enough.

The airline posted operating revenue of $20.2 billion for the third quarter, up 21% year over year, according to results reported by CNBC and confirmed by an SEC filing reviewed by Alphastreet. Adjusted EPS came in at $1.72, a penny above the prior-year quarter but short of the $1.77 analyst consensus tracked by MarketBeat. It was the first earnings miss in two years.

The culprit was fuel. According to an earnings-call summary published by BigGo Finance, Delta absorbed $1.6 billion in higher fuel costs during the quarter, a figure that ran $500 million above the company's own guidance. Pre-tax profit held at $1.5 billion, roughly flat with a year earlier, but only because revenue growth offset the cost hit almost dollar for dollar. That math doesn't leave much margin for error, and the guidance revision confirmed it.

Delta now expects full-year 2026 adjusted EPS of $5.10 to $5.60, according to CNBC. In July, when fuel prices were lower, management had guided $6.50 to $7.50. That's a $1.50 cut at the midpoint, or roughly 22%. Fourth-quarter guidance also came in below analyst estimates, with the company projecting EPS of $1.15 to $1.65 on an all-in fuel price of $4.25 per gallon, more than double last year's level, per BigGo Finance.

The premium cabin remained the one clean line on the income statement. Premium revenue grew 18% in the quarter to $6.82 billion, outpacing main-cabin sales growth of 12%, per CNBC. Premium and loyalty streams now account for 61% of total revenue, according to reporting by Panabee. CEO Ed Bastian, as quoted in a GuruFocus earnings-call summary, argued that Delta's return on invested capital sits at 11%, above its cost of capital, while he put the domestic-industry average ex-Delta at 3%.

That kind of benchmark talk is standard earnings-call positioning. What's harder to dismiss is the operating leverage problem underneath it. Total operating expenses rose 25% to $18.7 billion in the quarter, per Panabee, outpacing the 21% revenue gain and compressing the non-GAAP operating margin by 1.7 percentage points to 9.4%. Non-fuel unit costs also rose 7.3%, a number that suggests the cost pressure isn't purely a commodity story.

Net income fell 47% year over year to $756 million, or $1.15 per share on a GAAP basis, per Alphastreet. Free cash flow was $460 million in the quarter, bringing the year-to-date total to $1.9 billion. Delta cut total debt by $1.2 billion since December 2025, per Panabee, which at least shows the balance sheet moving in a manageable direction even as the income statement tightens.

For Q4, Delta guided roughly 20% revenue growth year over year on approximately 3% capacity growth, per BigGo Finance. If fuel stays near $4.25 a gallon, that operating margin target of 7% to 9% will require non-fuel costs to cooperate. Management said it expects non-fuel unit costs to improve one to two points sequentially in Q4. Whether the airline can hold that line while adding capacity is what the next earnings call will settle.
