Cubs' Crow-Armstrong Hits Leadoff and Walk-Off Homers in Same Game, Clinches Second Straight 30-30 Season

CHICAGO, Pete Crow-Armstrong opened the Crosstown Classic by hitting the first pitch of the game out of the park and closed it by hitting the last one out too. In between, he went 4-for-5, stole a base, and turned Wrigley Field into a revival meeting. That's the kind of game you file away and tell people about later.

On Monday night, according to a game recap published by MLB.com, Crow-Armstrong crushed a two-run walk-off homer in the bottom of the tenth inning to give the Cubs a 7-5 win over the White Sox. The blast was his 30th home run of the season, and with 31 stolen bases already on the ledger, it clinched his second consecutive 30-30 campaign.

He's 24 years old.

The history stacked up fast after the final out. According to CBS Sports, Crow-Armstrong became just the sixth player in the modern era to hit both a leadoff home run and a walk-off homer in the same game. The leadoff shot came on the very first pitch the Cubs saw all night. The walk-off came on the game's last pitch. You couldn't script that if you tried.

As for the 30-30 milestone in back-to-back seasons, Sammy Sosa is the only other Cub ever to post even one such season. Crow-Armstrong has now done it twice in a row, joining a company of names - José Ramírez, Bobby Witt Jr., Ryan Braun, Alfonso Soriano, Barry Bonds, Ron Gant, Bobby Bonds and Willie Mays - as the only players to pull it off in consecutive years, according to Last Word on Sports.

The Cubs moved to 73-53 with the win, per Yahoo Sports, and Crow-Armstrong's OPS climbed to .929. He's also leading all players, not just center fielders, with 23 outs above average defensively, according to CBS Sports. That last number matters. Plenty of first basemen and corner outfielders rack up 30 home runs. Almost none of them are also the best defensive player on the field every night.

Manager Craig Counsell didn't reach for nuance after the game. "This might be his best game in the big leagues right here," Counsell said, per MLB.com. Reliever Jacob Webb, who got credited with the win after throwing a scoreless tenth, put it more plainly in a quote reported by the Chicago Sun-Times: "Pete's my MVP."

With 36 games left in the regular season and sitting at 30 homers and 31 steals, the 40-40 conversation is already running, per CBS Sports. The steals will be there. The power has obviously arrived. What's left to discuss is whether the National League MVP voters see what everyone inside Wrigley has been watching all summer.
