Colleen Hoover's 'Verity' Opens Theaters Oct. 2 With Hathaway, Johnson, and Hoover's Best Box Office Shot Yet

BookTok has had a good few years sending novels to the top of bestseller lists. It's now, apparently, sending them to theaters, too, and Colleen Hoover isn't done testing that thesis.

Verity, the psychological thriller directed by Michael Showalter and adapted from Hoover's 2018 novel, opens October 2. <cite index="22-13,22-14">The film stars Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson, and follows Lowen Ashleigh, a struggling writer hired to ghostwrite for renowned author Verity Crawford after Lowen uncovers an unfinished manuscript that may reveal disturbing truths about her employer.</cite> Josh Hartnett rounds out the leads as Verity's husband Jeremy.

The London premiere landed Thursday, September 24. <cite index="27-3,27-4,27-5,27-6">Johnson and Hartnett walked the carpet together at Curzon Mayfair, while their co-star Hathaway, currently pregnant, did press separately in New York City the same day.</cite> That split-city rollout didn't exactly dampen the noise; if anything, it gave the film two separate media cycles in one news day.

The buzz is warranted. Showalter, best known for his comedic touch on projects like The Big Sick and The Eyes of Tammy Faye, is playing in genuinely dark territory here. <cite index="23-3,23-4,23-5">The story puts Lowen inside the Crawford home to ghostwrite the final novel in Verity's celebrated book series, but once there she finds a hidden manuscript that makes her wonder whether the woman she's imitating committed a heinous crime.</cite> Nick Antosca, who knows his way around literary dread from his work on Channel Zero, wrote the screenplay.

In an interview reviewed by Variety, Hoover and Showalter discussed the decision to lean into the erotic thriller genre, and Hathaway offered her own take on what makes the material work: <cite index="25-4,25-5,25-6,25-7">she described the story as "a strategy of mirrors," saying the experience is "not just about questioning what you're seeing" but "questioning why you have a tendency to believe some people over others."</cite> That's a more sophisticated pitch than most book adaptations get, and it suggests a cast and director who've actually thought about what the novel is doing.

This matters because Hoover's box office track record is real now, not speculative. <cite index="21-5">Verity marks the next adaptation from Hoover's book universe following It Ends With Us, Regretting You, and Reminders of Him.</cite> <cite index="21-6">Hoover self-published Verity in 2018 before Grand Central Publishing acquired it in 2021,</cite> and the novel then became one of the most shared titles in BookTok history. The fan base has been waiting on this film for a long time, and they know the source material well enough to have opinions about every casting decision.

<cite index="20-12,20-13">This year marks Amazon MGM's first with a full theatrical slate, and after a rough start to 2026, the studio has been enjoying a box office win with Project Hail Mary, which has grossed $600 million worldwide so far.</cite> Verity is the kind of film that could extend that momentum into October, when the audience for adult-skewing thrillers typically shows up.

The CoHo cinematic universe, if we're calling it that now, is clearly not slowing down. Also already on screens this week: <cite index="13-4,13-5">The Love Hypothesis, based on Ali Hazelwood's bestselling novel, is now streaming on Prime Video, starring Lili Reinhart as Olive Smith and Tom Bateman as Dr. Adam Carlsen.</cite> <cite index="11-14">After 40 weeks on the New York Times Best Seller list, the story of PhD student Olive and professor Adam was greenlit as a feature film.</cite> The BookTok pipeline has never been more literal.

Verity is in theaters October 2. Whether it plays like a prestige thriller or a gloriously pulpy crowd-pleaser probably depends on which ending you believe. Hoover wrote two of them.
