Brewers Sweep Dodgers Out of NLCS, End Chase for Three-Peat
Milwaukee takes the pennant in four games, ending Los Angeles's bid for a third consecutive World Series title and sending the Brewers to the Fall Classic for the first time since 1982.
MILWAUKEE, The Los Angeles Dodgers came into this series chasing history. They leave it chasing answers.
The Milwaukee Brewers swept Los Angeles out of the National League Championship Series on Wednesday night, winning Game 4 by a score of 6-4 to claim the NL pennant and book their first World Series trip since 1982. As reported by MLB.com, the loss ended the Dodgers' bid for what would have been the fifth three-peat in World Series history, and the first ever by a National League club.
It wasn't close, and it wasn't fluky. Game by game, the Brewers picked apart a Dodgers rotation that was supposed to be their hammer. According to coverage from MLB.com, Milwaukee hung a loss on Tarik Skubal in Game 1, ground Yoshinobu Yamamoto out after 2 2/3 innings in Game 2, took Blake Snell deep three times in Game 3 despite Snell not having surrendered a homer in his previous 10 starts, and then eroded a 4-0 lead against Tyler Glasnow in Game 4. That's the whole rotation, top to bottom, and none of them got out clean.
The Dodgers president of baseball operations, Andrew Friedman, had said after the NLDS clincher, per MLB.com, that he felt the starting rotation was "a real strength of ours." It was. Until it wasn't.
What made it worse for Los Angeles is that they threw their two best starters, Skubal and Yamamoto, at home in Milwaukee in Games 1 and 2, and got nothing to show for either. The Brewers came back from three separate deficits in Game 2 alone, a 7-4 win that put the series in a stranglehold before it ever got to Dodger Stadium.
Shohei Ohtani, dealing with lingering right biceps and left knee injuries per the MLB.com game account, broke out with a three-run homer in Game 4, but the Brewers had already made their move. William Contreras was the story on the Milwaukee side, blasting a 436-foot game-tying shot to straightaway center in Game 2 and adding to his series damage from there.
This was a rematch Milwaukee wanted badly. The Brewers had been swept out of last year's NLCS, and according to NBC Sports, manager Pat Murphy's club came in with a chip the size of American Family Field on its shoulder. They validated it. The Brewers won four of seven regular-season meetings against Los Angeles, including three out of four in a key August set in LA, per the Yahoo Sports series preview.
For the Dodgers, the sweep opens a harder conversation. Miguel Rojas is retiring. The back-to-back championship core has cracks. Per MLB.com, the offense couldn't produce the big hit when it mattered, and a bullpen that was supposed to be improved leaked at the worst moments.
There's real front-office work to do in Los Angeles this winter, and the Dodgers have the resources to do it. But that's for January. Right now, Milwaukee is going to the World Series, and a city that last popped champagne for a pennant when Ronald Reagan was in his first term gets to find out what October feels like again.
