Brewers Chase Yamamoto, Silence Ohtani to Take 2-0 NLCS Lead Over Dodgers

William Contreras drove in three runs and Milwaukee's bullpen retired the final 15 Dodgers batters as the Brew Crew pushed the two-time defending champions to the brink.

MILWAUKEE, The Dodgers came into American Family Field with their reigning World Series MVP on the mound and Shohei Ohtani batting cleanup. They left down two games with no answers and a long flight to Los Angeles to think about it.

Milwaukee beat Los Angeles 7-4 in Game 2 of the NLCS on Monday night, and the series is shaping up the way the Brewers always believed it could. The Dodgers, per the schedule reported by MLB.com, now trail a best-of-seven 2-0 heading into Wednesday's Game 3 at Dodger Stadium.

The number that should terrify the Dodger front office came courtesy of CBS Sports: teams are historically 8-51 when trailing 2-0 in the League Championship Series. That's a rounding error. It isn't a comeback spot.

Yoshinobu Yamamoto, who threw a complete game against these same Brewers a year ago in the NLCS sweep, didn't get through three innings Monday. According to CBS Sports, he gave up three runs on four hits, walked two, and struck out one. A 12-pitch plate appearance from Brewers cleanup man Jake Bauers wore him down in that third inning, and Christian Yelich's two-RBI single ended his night. Manager Dave Roberts didn't dress it up afterward. 'Obviously wasn't sharp,' Roberts told reporters. 'Just wasn't sharp today.'

William Contreras made sure sharp didn't matter. The three-time All-Star catcher singled home a run off Yamamoto in the first to tie the game, homered off Kris Bubic in the fifth to tie it again, then singled home the go-ahead run in the sixth, according to True Blue LA's recap of the game. Three runs batted in. Three separate moments when the Dodgers thought they had air in the balloon and Contreras let it out.

After starter Logan Henderson was pulled with no outs in the fifth, Milwaukee turned the game over to its bullpen. Per Yahoo Sports, Dustin May, JoJo Romero, Abner Uribe and Aaron Ashby then combined to retire the final 15 Dodgers batters in order. That isn't an accident. That's a roster construction philosophy, and it's working.

Meanwhile Ohtani, the reason the Dodgers' payroll looks the way it does, is disappearing. Yahoo Sports reported that his top-of-the-order teammates, Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman, Teoscar Hernandez and Ohtani, went a combined 1-for-13 with one walk in Game 2. Ohtani was 0-for-4 with two strikeouts and is now slashing .150/.261/.150 across the postseason. He's still nursing biceps and knee injuries that have dogged him through the second half, per Sports Illustrated's NLCS preview, and nothing about the Brewers' pitching staff makes that an easy repair job.

This NLCS is a rematch of last year's, when the Dodgers swept Milwaukee in four straight. The Brewers went 103-59 this season, per ESPN's game recap, and enter Game 3 having outscored Los Angeles 9-5 through two games at home. The series now shifts to a ballpark where the Dodgers are comfortable and the crowd will be loud. That's the only real hope L.A. has right now.

But comfort doesn't retire the last 15 batters. Yamamoto didn't do it Monday when he was supposed to be the stopper. And Ohtani, at full health, is a different equation than Ohtani limping through October, going 1-for-7 in a series he was supposed to carry.

Game 3 is Wednesday on FS1. The Dodgers need to win it. They know that. The math is not subtle.
