Barclays Lifts 2026 Income Target After Investment Bank Posts Record Quarter
The U.K. lender raised its full-year income target to £31.5 billion and announced a £1 billion buyback, but shares fell after reported EPS missed analyst estimates.
Barclays reported second-quarter group income of £8.3 billion on July 28, up 16% year on year, and raised its full-year income target, even as the market punished the stock for a headline earnings-per-share miss.
The shares dropped sharply on the news. According to Investing.com, which reviewed the Q2 results presentation, Barclays stock fell 6.25% in premarket trading to $26.78 despite the revenue beat. The divergence is worth unpacking: the EPS figure that cleared the wires was $0.23 against an analyst consensus of $0.82, a 72.5% miss, per the earnings call transcript reviewed by Investing.com. But that gap owes significantly to accounting and currency translation mechanics rather than an operational collapse. The underlying numbers were notably cleaner.
Profit before tax rose more than 30% to £3.25 billion for the quarter, per CNBC's live markets coverage. Return on tangible equity came in at 16.1%, well above the bank's stated full-year floor of 12%. Revenue of $11.01 billion cleared the analyst consensus of $10.78 billion by about 2%, according to the Investing.com transcript.
The investment bank carried a lot of weight in that beat. Per the Motley Fool's earnings call transcript, the unit's return on tangible equity rose nearly 4 percentage points year on year to 16%. BigGo Finance, citing the call, reported equities income up 44% in dollar terms and advisory fees up 51%, a combination that signals Barclays captured a disproportionate share of a broadly active capital-markets quarter.
Capital return was the other headline. According to the Quartr earnings summary, Barclays announced a £1 billion share buyback alongside an £800 million interim dividend, bringing first-half distributions to £2.3 billion, a 61% jump from the same period a year earlier. The CET1 ratio held at 14.3%, or 14.0% pro forma for the buyback, near the top of the bank's target range.
Group Finance Director Anna Cross flagged one potential drag on the back half. She told analysts on the call, as cited in the BigGo Finance account, that higher benchmark rates were compressing margins on securitized loans, and warned that quarterly income may not fully rebuild to first-quarter levels through the rest of 2026. That caveat likely reinforced sellers' resolve on a day when the EPS print gave them cover.
On costs, the bank said it delivered £350 million in first-half efficiency savings and is planning up to £500 million in additional structural cost actions, per the Yahoo Finance earnings call highlights. The cost-to-income ratio improved to 54% in the quarter from 59% a year earlier, per Quartr's summary.
Loan quality held roughly steady. The Q2 impairment charge was £571 million, equating to a 51-basis-point loan loss rate, up from 44 basis points in the year-ago period. Cross told analysts that consumer and corporate balance sheets remained sound and that borrower behavior was rational, according to Yahoo Finance's earnings highlights. The bank continues to expect its full-year loan loss rate near the top end of its 50-to-60-basis-point guidance range, which leaves limited cushion if the U.K. labor market deteriorates in the second half.
CEO C.S. Venkatakrishnan, on the call as transcribed by the Motley Fool, pointed to the bank's technology buildout as a structural lever, framing the current investment cycle as preparation for what he called an "all-weather" return profile through 2028. Forward guidance deserves the usual skepticism: the upgraded £31.5 billion income target assumes capital markets stay cooperative, and Anna Cross's own caveat about securitized-loan margins is a live risk to that number.
