Aces Sweep Fever From WNBA Playoffs as A'ja Wilson Closes Case on Best Big Three Left Standing

Wilson dropped 36 points in Game 3 to send Indiana and Caitlin Clark home, setting up a semifinal showdown the league has been waiting for.

The Las Vegas Aces did what the Las Vegas Aces do in October. They took Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever three games, put on a performance in the deciding one, and moved on. Done. Next.

A'ja Wilson scored 36 points in 37 minutes in Game 3 on October 1st, and the Aces eliminated the Fever 94-83, according to ESPN's postseason coverage. It capped a first-round series that, to be fair to Indiana, was closer than the Aces probably expected going in. But in the end, a three-game set against the reigning WNBA champions is not where you want to find your ceiling.

The numbers from this series were not kind to Fever fans. Wilson went for 38 points, 16 rebounds and 4 blocks in Game 1, shooting 15-for-19 from the floor, per reporting from Yahoo Sports. That performance was the 11th 30-point playoff game of her career, extending her own WNBA record. The next closest player is the Liberty's Breanna Stewart at nine. Wilson didn't have to do the math out loud. The box score did it for her.

Game 2 flipped to Indiana, which is how you get a Game 3. But Wilson came right back and dropped 36 in the clincher. Clark finished with 18 points in Game 3, and Kelsey Mitchell added 23, per ESPN. The Fever competed. They just ran into someone who has been here before, several times, and who doesn't appear to be slowing down.

The broader picture is worth a moment. The Aces have now advanced to at least the semifinals for the seventh consecutive season, according to ESPN's playoff coverage. That's not a run, it's a standard. Wilson has MVP honors in three of the past four seasons, per Yahoo Sports, and at some point the conversation stops being about whether she's the best player in the WNBA and starts being about the length of her place in the league's history.

For Indiana, this is a complicated exit. Clark drew the attention she draws everywhere, the crowd in Indianapolis was loud, and Game 2 went their way. But going into a best-of-three first-round series as the six seed against Las Vegas with home-court advantage in Game 2 is a spot you can win from. They didn't. The front office will have decisions to make about how to build around Clark in the offseason. The gap between the Fever and the Aces right now is still a gap.

There was a sidebar during the series: Wilson earned a technical foul in Game 2 after confronting a fan in the Gainbridge Fieldhouse stands, according to Fox News reporting. The league investigated and, according to ESPN, chose not to suspend her. Wilson was not apologetic about the confrontation. She answered for it and moved forward. So did the Aces.

Las Vegas advances to face a semifinal opponent that will not be easy. Per ESPN's playoff analysis, the Golden State Valkyries don't have a direct defensive matchup for Wilson. During the regular season, Wilson averaged 25.0 points per game against Golden State. So did Jackie Young at 23.7, the top two individual scoring averages against the Valkyries all season. Those are not numbers a defense wants going into a series.

The Yankees without Aaron Judge are sweeping the Red Sox in the Bronx at the same moment. On this particular October 1st, the stories that stuck were the ones where the best player in the building was doing exactly what everyone expected, and doing it better than anyone else could match.
